WHO Flags Rising Global Infertility. Why Early Fertility Mapping Is Now Essential in India

The World Health Organization recently highlighted that nearly one in six individuals globally experiences infertility during their reproductive years, echoing trends that healthcare professionals have observed for some time. Increasingly, couples are seeking help for conception challenges, often at older ages and with underlying health issues that may have developed quietly over the years. Today, infertility is rarely attributed to a single factor. Instead, it is usually the result of a complex interplay between delayed diagnosis, evolving lifestyles, metabolic concerns, and the natural effects of aging, says Dr Nimisha Shantilal Pandya, Fertility Specialist at Birla Fertility & IVF, Ahmedabad.

In India, infertility rates range from 3.8 percent to 17 percent depending on the population studied. Yet, the central concern is not just the number of people affected, but the timing at which individuals recognise a problem. Many assume their reproductive health is intact until they encounter difficulties conceiving. By the time they seek guidance, ovarian reserve may have diminished, sperm quality may be compromised, or metabolic and hormonal imbalances may be well established. These changes are often silent and without testing, they typically go unnoticed.

This underscores the value of early fertility mapping. By proactively assessing reproductive hormones, ovarian reserve, uterine health, and key sperm parameters before attempting conception, clinicians can identify potential risks early on. This approach supports open, informed discussions and timely interventions while solutions are still straightforward. Even modest adjustments – whether in lifestyle, weight management, metabolic health, or timing – can significantly influence outcomes when addressed early.

Delaying evaluations, however, can complicate the situation. Once multiple issues have accumulated, couples may require more extensive testing, advanced treatments, or assisted reproductive techniques. Such interventions are not only more demanding medically, but they also escalate financial and emotional strain. Many couples express that earlier awareness could have alleviated considerable stress, time, and expense.

There is also a profound psychological impact. Uncertainty around the causes of infertility can lead to anxiety, guilt, and rushed decisions. Early understanding of one’s reproductive health brings clarity, allowing expectations and treatment plans to align more realistically and reducing the emotional turbulence that can accompany fertility challenges.

With more individuals postponing parenthood for education, careers, or urban living, fertility awareness must evolve accordingly. Early fertility mapping integrates reproductive health into routine life planning, emphasising prevention and preparedness while considering affordability. For healthcare providers, this proactive approach offers a practical means to safeguard fertility and minimize unnecessary medical and financial burdens for families in the future.
