The State Association of Gujarat Powerlifting, in association with Vitalysis, successfully organised the 2nd edition of Gujarat State Men/Women Open Powerlifting, Bench Press & Deadlift Championship for 2022-23 on 22nd May 2022 at Decathlon, Ahmedabad. The event saw new champions being crowned as Gujarat State Strongman, Strongwoman and Champion of Champions, as well as the new record of youngest female participation in a state-level powerlifting competition set by Kanak Gurjar, a 10 year old powerlifting enthusiast.

The championship was co-sponsored by Vitalysis – a health and wellness brand based in Ahmedabad that provides natural, ayurvedic nutrition products made using research-based formulations. Their range of herbal supplements help in enhancing strength and endurance, proving beneficial to the athletes.

International gold medal winning athletes, Indrasingh Gurjar and Dharini Gurjar – representing the association, helmed the proceedings of the championship and guided the team to provide a positive experience for the participants. The State Association of Gujarat Powerlifting is affiliated to Barbell Club and World Powerlifting Congress.

The winners of the competition across the weight categories were judged on the basis of their performance in three flagship events, namely, Squats, Bench Press and Deadlifts. More than 120 athletes across Gujarat had participated in the Championship, which also served as the international selection trials for Powerlifting Championship to be held in Kyrgyzstan and the United Kingdom (UK) this year.

Few of the notable mentions of winners at the championship includes:

Bhavesh Dabhani – a gold medalist in World Powerlifting Championship 2016 & 18, was crowned the Gujarat State Champion of Champions in men’s category with superlative performances across the events, breaking the championship record in the process.

Nitu Jogi was declared the Gujarat State Strongwoman for earning the number 1 spot in deadlift, bench press and squats across women’s category.

Sudhanshu Joshi – earned gold medals for bench press, deadlifts, and the squats events in men, a clean sweep in all 3 events.

Kanak Gurjar, the 10 year old girl was the youngest participant in the competition, performing in all the three events.

Other winners include Pankaj Yadav, Santosh Singh, Sachin Rajput, and Dharinee Joshi, among others.

Indrasingh Gurjar, the President of State Association of Gujarat Powerlifting said, “National powerlifting championship held earlier this year saw more than 100 participants from Gujarat. This shows how popular this sport is in this part of the country and we are extremely happy that we have a role to play in its growth. This is the 2nd edition of the championship and we saw athletes from far-off towns of Gujarat like Surat, Navsari and Rajkot participate this year. The team has done a fantastic job in putting together the event with the available resources and I extend my gratitude towards them. We are all geared up to host the next edition with more enthusiasm”

Being associated as one of the sponsors, the representative of Vitalysis, Rohit Prajapati said, “We are glad that the competition has received a huge response. It is events like these that provide a platform to the budding athletes, even from remotest of places in the State to showcase their talents and accomplishments on an international level. We congratulate all the winners who have been crowned new champions. As a fitness and lifestyle focussed brand, we definitely look forward to promoting more local athletes and empowering them to conquer the world.”

Apart from Vitalysis, sports and fitness-focused brands like Decathlon, Trubite, Alpha Armour Gym, and Kratos – The Gym, too extended their support in organizing the championship.
