Behind every successful entrepreneur lies a personal story that the world rarely sees.

For entrepreneur, film producer and Founder of the Ahmedabad International Literature Festival (AILF), Umashanker Yadav, that story unfolded over fifteen emotionally exhausting days and five unforgettable hours that transformed his family’s life.

It began with what appeared to be a routine eye examination for his wife, Umlesh Yadav, after she experienced a gradual decline in vision. The diagnosis came as a shock. Doctors found that she had already lost nearly fifty percent of her eyesight and warned that, without urgent treatment, the loss could become permanent.

Unwilling to leave any question unanswered, Yadav consulted several leading specialists and hospitals. Further investigations revealed that the real cause was not an eye disorder but a tumour near the pituitary gland that was compressing the optic nerves. The condition was also accompanied by excessive secretion of growth hormone, which had begun causing gradual physical changes.

The family soon faced one of the most important decisions of their lives—choosing the right medical team for a highly complex surgery involving both the brain and the optic nerves.

Their search ultimately led them to Dr. B. K. Misra, one of India’s most respected neurosurgeons, and his team at PD Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai.

Looking back, Yadav says the experience tested him in ways no professional challenge ever had.

“Those fifteen days were filled with uncertainty. Every memory, every responsibility towards our daughter and every possible outcome kept running through my mind. When someone you love is fighting such a battle, success, business and public recognition lose all meaning. You simply pray and hope,” he said.

The surgery was successfully completed after several hours. According to the medical team, the tumour was removed successfully, pressure on the optic nerves was relieved, and Umlesh Yadav’s vision began improving immediately after the procedure. Doctors remain optimistic about her continued recovery.

Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Yadav praised the exceptional expertise and compassionate care of Dr. B. K. Misra. He also acknowledged Dr. Abhijit Warade, senior neurosurgeon on the surgical team, for patiently explaining every stage of the treatment and recovery process. He further thanked senior paediatrician Dr. Rupesh Shah and eminent neurophysician Dr. Pranav Kharod of Ahmedabad for their invaluable guidance, encouragement and constant support throughout the family’s difficult journey.

The experience, he says, reinforced lessons that he hopes others will remember.

“Never ignore persistent health symptoms. Seek expert medical advice without delay. Be financially prepared for medical emergencies, and never compromise on quality healthcare. Above all, hold on to hope. Modern medicine, timely diagnosis and dedicated doctors save lives every day.”

Yadav revealed that the family consciously chose to keep the medical situation private until the surgery was over, sharing it only with a few close friends and relatives. Following the successful treatment, he felt it was important to publicly thank everyone whose prayers and good wishes gave the family strength during the difficult period.

Today, as Umlesh Yadav continues her recovery, the family looks ahead with renewed confidence and gratitude.

For Yadav, the experience has become a powerful reminder that life’s greatest achievements are not always measured in professional milestones. Sometimes, they are found in the quiet relief of hearing that a loved one is safe and on the road to recovery.
