Microprocessors are known as the brains of electronics products. There is nothing wrong with saying that the present is the age of electronic gadgets and that they are based on microprocessors. It is a matter of great pride for India that researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, an Indian institute, developed the country’s first microprocessor and named it “Maushik”. It is named Maushik because of its size of 5.3mm × 5.15mm.
Technical aspects of the silicon processor:
- It is built using 180 nanometer technology.
- Size 5.315 X 5.155 sq m.m
- 103 functional IOs
- Package – 256 pin CQFP Package
- Core Voltage – 1.8v
- IO Voltage – 3.3v
- Gate Count – 647k
- Instance Count – 210k
- DFT – SCAN, JTAG
Mausik’s field applications include the following:
1) In smart cards including credit cards, ID cards, debit cards, travel cards for metros and driving licenses
2). Electronic Voting Machine (EVM)
3) In Office Management Systems (Attendance Registration, In Surveillance Cameras And In Safe Locks)
4) Consumer Electronics
5) In personal health management systems
According to a report from IIT Madras, it is an open source technology developed in India and the processor is made in India. One of the advantages of being open source is that researchers can modify it as needed.
