The event was graced by the most leading Pediatrician& IVF expert and was aimed to spread awareness about safe motherhood practices and prevent Neural Tube defects during COVID pandemic.
The webinar was hosted by Dr Sanchita Sarang- Nadkarni, Chief Executive for Spina Bifida Foundation, Mumbai. Dr. Santosh Karmarkar, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and Paediatric Urologist at Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre, and Founder of Spina Bifida Foundation, explained about Spina Bifida which in Latin means ‘Split Spine’. One of the main causes of this occurrence is the lack of folic acid and other important nutrients in maternal diet. Meyer Organics in collaboration with Spina Bifida Foundation, Mumbai wish to generate awareness amongst the doctors through which to be parents can prevent their child from being born with neural tube defect.
The talk emphasised on high incidence of neural tube defects in south-east Asian countries and very limited awareness among masses about its ways of prevention. Dr Karmarkar highlighted on importance of pre-conceptional folic acid and vitamin B12 supplementation for preventing neural tube defects. He also raised concerns about hidden issue of passive euthanasia in India. He also added about his recent experience at Katowice, Poland for attending foetal surgery on unborn baby for Spina Bifida.
He mentioned that, we may soon start such surgeries in India since major birth defects can be diagnosed antenatally on ultrasonography. Dr. AmeetPatki, IVF expert,Medical Director of Fertility Associates, Mumbai, briefly explained the challenges faced during Pregnancy due to COVID. Pregnant patients should maintain special care & hygiene and follow basic sanitization protocols. They should also consume immunity boosting food & supplements such as Vit D, Vit. C & Zn. Health professionals should also maintain proper precautions while treating Pregnant patients.
