A heritage-inspired Navratri celebration aims to revive the charm of traditional garba, bringing generations together through culture, music and community spirit

Ahmedabad:   This Navratri, Ahmedabad is set to experience a celebration that goes beyond music, lights and dance, bringing alive the nostalgia of Gujarat’s traditional narrow lanes through   Sankdi Sheri Garba  . Inspired by the warmth, simplicity and community spirit of the old  sheris  of Gujarat, the heritage-themed event aims to recreate the authentic charm of traditional Navratri in a spacious open-ground setting.

Strategically located in a central part of Ahmedabad, with convenient connectivity to both Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, Sankdi Sheri Garba is being organised through the collective efforts of four event management companies:   Satyam Events Excellence, The Dream Organiser, S.H Royal Events, and Paddy & Co.

The concept of Sankdi Sheri draws inspiration from the narrow lanes of Gujarat’s towns and villages, which traditionally served as the heart of community life. During those times, Navratri celebrations were not defined by grand stages or elaborate arrangements. Instead, people would step out of their homes and come together to dance shoulder to shoulder, enjoying simple garba rhythms, familiar tunes and the joy of celebrating with neighbours and families.

The essence of these celebrations lay in togetherness, cultural traditions and a strong sense of belonging. Keeping this spirit alive, Sankdi Sheri Garba aims to bring back the nostalgic atmosphere of Gujarat’s traditional lanes, where the joy of garba was rooted in simplicity and community participation.

While the charm of traditional narrow lanes remains timeless, organising large-scale garba celebrations in such spaces today presents practical challenges, including limited space, restricted movement and crowd safety concerns. Recognising this, the organisers have envisioned a unique concept that recreates the spirit of the old  sheris  within the comfort and scale of a modern open ground.

The experience will bring together the familiar ambience of traditional Gujarat, simple rhythmic garba steps and the soulful strains of the shehnai, allowing visitors to reconnect with the cultural roots of Navratri while enjoying a spacious and comfortable environment.

Sankdi Sheri Garba is designed as more than just a garba venue; it is a heritage-inspired experience that seeks to transport visitors into the atmosphere of old Gujarat. The concept also aims to introduce younger generations, who may have only heard stories of traditional lane-based garba celebrations, to the warmth and authenticity of this cultural heritage.

Unlike conventional grandstand-style celebrations that often focus on scale and spectacle, Sankdi Sheri places community participation and familiarity at the centre of its vision. The objective is to create a welcoming atmosphere where every participant feels connected, much like dancing in their own neighbourhood with family, friends and fellow residents.

With its distinctive heritage-based concept, centrally accessible location and the collective experience of its organising partners, Sankdi Sheri Garba aims to offer Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar residents a meaningful Navratri experience that celebrates the timeless traditions of Gujarat.

For those who cherish the nostalgia of traditional garba nights, the familiar rhythms, simple steps and happiness of dancing alongside loved ones, Sankdi Sheri Garba promises to bring back that cherished feeling, one raas at a time.
